The decision to set up the hospital was taken at a meeting of the cabinet chaired by chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday.

"We have decided to set up a 200-bed hospital in Burari to improve medical facilities," Dikshit said.

Delhi health minister AK Walia added that the cabinet had approved a budget of Rs. 200 crore for construction of the hospital, though a deadline for the project was not announced. "We hope to start the project at the earliest. Construction of the hospital, which will begin once the paperwork - including all necessary clearances - is complete, will be finished in less than a year," he said.

The government has set a target of starting the construction of seven other hospitals this year.

Officials said four 200-bedded hospitals would come up at Madipur, Siraspur, Hastsal and Ambedkar Nagar and two 100-bed hospitals at Sarita Vihar and Pooth Khurd. Work is also underway at the 750-bed hospital in Dwarka.
