Cabinet clears foreign varsity bill

The cabinet today cleared a bill that will enable foreign educational institutions set up campuses in India. The bill will now be tabled in parliament for its approval.

The cabinet on Monday cleared a bill that will enable foreign educational institutions set up campuses in India.

“This is a milestone which will enhance choices, increase competition, and benchmark quality,” Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“(It's) a larger revolution than even (the one) in the telecom sector,” Sibal added.

The bill will now be tabled in parliament for its approval.
