Cash-strapped Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has made it clear to the Delhi Police that it could ill-afford to continue to allow its officers travel in the DTC-run buses for free. HT reports.

Cash-strapped Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has made it clear to the Delhi Police that it could ill-afford to continue to allow its officers travel in the DTC-run buses for free.

Though officially they are not allowed to do so and require to buy a ticket in the DTC buses, police officers often travel for free in the state-run buses. DTC has taken up the issue with the Delhi government's transport department as well as with the Delhi Police.

Several police officers were recently found travelling without ticket during DTC's special checking drive, which was conducted recently. "It is a practice with Delhi Police personnel that they don’t buy tickets and travel for free in DTC buses," said a DTC spokesperson.

According to the orders of the transport department, Delhi Police officers are not allowed to travel in a DTC bus without ticket even when they are in uniform.

"We have suggested to the Delhi Police that it should pay Rs 800 every month for each of its 60,000 men towards travel pass,” the spokesperson said. “Policemen cannot be allowed to travel free as they get travel allowance in their salary. The authorities should give that allowance to us as their men never purchase ticket," he added.
