The CBI also sealed Selvaraj’s house in Pondicherry in connection with a corruption case in Lakshadweep, said agency spokesperson Harsh Bhal.

The agency took action against Selvaraj during its investigation about a case lodged this year against IAS officer Abrahum Varickamackal, the then Collector of Lakshadweep; S. Attakoya, Superintending Engineer with Lakshadweep Public Works Department (LPWD); Achada Ahammed Haji and Dr K.P. Muthukoya (both Board Members of LPWD) and Mohammed Kassim, a private contractor.

“According to the FIR, the allegation is that Abrahum, Attakoya and other public servants abused their official position during the period between 2006 and 2009 and entered into a criminal conspiracy with a private contractor named Mohammed Kassim. Abrahum illegally awarded contracts to Kassim for supply of river sand and granite chips from the mainland to the islands of Lakshadweep,” said Bhal.

“Though the contract amount of Rs 92,72,956 was beyond the financial competence of Abrahum, he awarded the same to Kassim, as the Chairman of Lakshadweep Building Development Board.”

According to Bhal, although Selvaraj had initially refused to ratify the Board’s decision citing serious financial irregularities, he later “joined the conspiracy and allowed the matter to rest and, in return, accepted huge illegal gratification from Kassim during this period”.
