As part of the process, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Friday launched a membership drive across colleges in Delhi, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

“NSUI is the only student organisation in the country which has started such kind of democratic process. This is part of Rahulji’s vision,” NSUI national president Hibi Eden told HT. “Being an open process, anybody can take part in it but a student should be below 27 years of age.”

The membership drive will go on till October 30. Elections will be held after that.

In Delhi, the party will try to rope in as many members from 246 colleges affiliated to four varsities — Delhi University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jamia Hamdard — and drawn from nine districts. Of these, 20 are girls’ colleges.

“Elections will be held for three units — college, district and state. A college unit should have a minimum membership of 50 students,” Eden said.

The college committee will comprise of five members — president, vice-president, two general secretaries in open category and one reserved for girls, and there would be five delegates with one reserved for girls.

On every next 25 members, a unit will get an additional delegate. The ratio of reservation for boys and girls as delegates in co-ed colleges has been kept at 80:20.

The district and the state committees will have eight members each.
