Delhi Main metro station renamed Chandni Chowk

The change, the fifth so far, was done after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation received suggestions from trade bodies and residents' welfare associations.

Don’t quarrel at the ticket counter if you ask for a ticket to the Delhi Main station and are offered one to Chandni Chowk.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has named the Delhi Main station Chandni Chowk after receiving suggestions from trade bodies and residents' welfare associations.

"We have a community interaction programme and our department takes note whenever there is any grievance or suggestion from their side, and the recent development is one such case," said Anuj Dayal, chief spokesperson of the DMRC.

The station is located in the bustling Chandi Chowk commercial area of old Delhi.

"We took into account the actual name and historical importance of the location before changing the name", Dayal said.

So far, Delhi Metro has renamed four stations - Ganesh Nagar to Janakpuri East, Prem Nagar to Uttam Nagar West, Moolchand Nagar to Adarsh Nagar and Tri Nagar to Inderlok.

Delhi Metro, the first section of which was flagged off in December 2002, carries around 4,50,000 passengers daily and earns a revenue of Rs 6 million every day. Its current routes cover 56 km and network expansion in a few months will add to the distance.

On December 30, 2005, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the third line of the metro from Barakhamba in central Delhi to Dwarka. The route covers 22.8 kilometres and has 22 stations.
