Delhi on best behaviour
The traffic police came out with a series of advertisements asking people to avoid arterial roads that fell near the venues and stadia.
Fear factor and surprise patrols
Being related to a VIP also couldn't help you escape a traffic violation during the Games. The fact that no "name dropping" would help if someone was caught driving on the blue lane helped. Surprise patrols by senior officers kept policemen on their toes. Since the offence was compoundable, the driving licence was confiscated and sent to the court.
Same rule for all
Requests by VIPs, politicians and even senior police officers to use the dedicated lanes were swiftly turned down by the police. The message was clear that only Games’ vehicles would be allowed to ply on the dedicated lanes. The police commissioner had himself given directions to fine motorists irrespective of their positions.

Steeper fine and penalty
A fine of Rs 2000 and fear of going to jail kept the Delhiites in control. People kept off the blue lane more out of fear of getting jailed than fine. Initially, the fine was imposed but later on the police came up with a notification to send people to jail and impounding the vehicles. Though no one was arrested, it surely acted as a deterrent.
Extensive advertising by police
The traffic police came out with a series of advertisements asking people to avoid arterial roads that fell near the
venues and stadia. In almost all the ads they extensively encouraged the use of public transport. Almost everyday there was an advertisement by the police warning people of the routes to be avoided.
