The mercury touched 44.1 degree Celsius on Tuesday afternoon, making it the hottest day of the season so far. The maximum was a staggering five degrees above normal.

The Met department has not predicted any relief in the next five days. In fact, it says, the next few days will be as hot, if not hotter. "There are no chances of rain. Wednesday can be as hot as Tuesday was," said a senior Met official.

The mornings too have not been affording any respite to Delhiites. Since two weeks, mercury has consistently crossed the normal mark. On Tuesday, the minimum was recorded as 28.5 degrees, three degrees above normal.

The humidity was also high and oscillated between 19% and 68%. Last year, the maximum had touched 45.4 degree Celsius on May 18, the highest in past 11 years for the month of May.
