The external affairs ministry only said on Saturday: “We are watching the developments unfolding there.”

The ministry also said the 3,600 people of Indian origin — of them, 2,200 live in Cairo — were safe. It, however, advised Indians to avoid non-essential travel to Egypt for the time being.

It said in a statement that the Indian embassy in Cairo was in touch with the Indian community. The embassy has also set up a control room. Helpline numbers are: +202 27360556, +202 2736 0052 and +202 2735 6168.
