GK robbery case: Police suspect role of insider

Taking a leaf out of their investigation into the infamous Anna Mammen case, the Delhi Police are probing the role of small-time service providers to nab the perpetrators of an armed robbery at a senior citizen couple’s residence in southeast Delhi’s Greater Kailash (GK) on Saturday. HT reports.

Taking a leaf out of their investigation into the infamous Anna Mammen case, the Delhi Police are probing the role of small-time service providers to nab the perpetrators of an armed robbery at a senior citizen couple’s residence in southeast Delhi’s Greater Kailash (GK) on Saturday.

Mammen, mother of criminal lawyer Rebecca John, lived alone on the ground-floor of her two-storey house. She had been robbed before being murdered by two men, one of whom had worked as a painter at her Vivek Vihar residence, on March 8.

The clinical precision with which five assailants struck at Sitaram Bansal, 66, and his wife, 64-year-old Sneha Bansal’s ground floor residence has led investigators to try to ascertain the role of an insider. This, they believe, could be the first step in cracking the crime.

“We are investigating the case from the point of view of several leads we have got after preliminary investigation. The fact that the assailants were aware of the exact topography of the Bansal residence has led us to believe that an insider is involved,” said Amulya Patnaik, JCP (southern range).

The ‘insider’, according to police, could either be a former housemaid or a service provider, like an electrician or painter, who had recently worked at the Bansal residence.

The Bansal residence was ransacked to the tune of atleast R2 lakh in cash and valuables, after an insider provided the assailants specific intelligence inputs about the vulnerability of the ground-floor as opposed to the floor above.
