Govt seeks relief for flyover-hit

Construction work has currently come to a halt as the Delhi government is yet to acquire the land, where the flyover will come up. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has said that it will start construction only when the resettlement process is complete and the land is freed. It has already given the Delhi government Rs. 24 crore to acquire land for the project. A meeting was held on Tuesday to sort out the land acquisition issue.

The foundation of the Rani Jhansi flyover - from Filmistan Cinema to St Stephen's Hospital - was laid in November 2008 and work was to be completed in 2011. Now, however, officials said that it would take at least another year for the flyover to be completed.

"To speed up work, we will take up the matter with the DDA. It will be ensured that all those who are dislocated, are given a flat by the DDA," said a senior Delhi government official.

The flyover will be 1.8 km-long and straddle Rani Jhansi Road, Bara Hindu Rao Road, DCM, Azad Market and Baraf Khana Chowk before touching down at St Stephen's Hospital.

Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit will write to the Railway Ministry to allot a piece of land, which is part of the flyover corridor. The project was pegged at Rs. 177 crore, but the cost has escalated to Rs. 210 crore due to the delays.
