Balli used to run a business of auto spare parts before he joined politics in 1977.

Education: Has studied till Class XII.

Political Career: He began his political innings in 1977 when he joined the Janata Party. He entered electoral politics after winning the municipal polls. He has been associated with the BJP since its inception. He has won three consecutive Delhi Assembly elections in 1993, 1998 and 2003. He was the industry minister in the first Assembly.

Family: Wife Baljeet Kaur is an interior designer. They have three sons and none of them have shown any interest in politics. “They have been supporting me from the start but politics is not their cup of tea,” Balli said. He has also been imprisoned once in Tihar jail while protesting against the MCD’s sealing-cum-demolition drive.

Cars: Balli has an ambassador. His sons each drive a Hyundai i-10, Hyundai Santro and a Tata Indica.
