‘I really missed my family and home’

When 17-year-old Subhashish Bhadra’s parents moved from Delhi to Kolkata last year, he decided to stay back.“I was sure I would be able to achieve my desired results only by remaining only in my school. I couldn’t imagine attending any other school,” said Bhadra, a Class XII student of Delhi Public School, R.K Puram. He scored 98 per cent, the highest in Delhi.

It wasn’t easy. “I lived all alone in an army guest house. I had to wash my clothes, arrange for my food, and live without a computer or TV,” he said. “I really missed my family and the comforts of living at home.”
Bhadra also saw several disappointments in the past year.

“I wanted to go to an Ivy League school, but was rejected by seven out of eight. Though I got through New York’s Stern School of Economics, where I really wanted to go, I did not get financial aid,” he said.

“I was also terrified of maths. I scored 77 per cent in my pre-Boards and mid-term exams at school. But my maths teacher Ritu Nayyar believed in me, and in my college applications had predicted I would score 99 per cent. I exceeded both our expectations,” he said.

He plans to study his favourite subject economics at Delhi University. “I haven’t decided yet between St. Stephen’s or SRCC (Sriram College of Commerce),” Bhadra said.
