India’s first ‘green’ stadium inaugurated

Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs M.S. Gill and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit jointly dedicated the newly built, first-ever green stadium for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 to the nation.

The Thyagaraj Stadium, the venue for netball event during the Commonwealth Games in October this year, is the only stadium in the country constructed on the ‘green building’ concept.

Not only has the stadium has been constructed using fly-ash bricks, it also boasts of features like water conservation through use of recycled water, rainwater harvesting system and piped natural gas (PNG)-run turbines that will generate 3.5 megawatt power to run the entire stadium.
