The race for the top post in the Bihar Congress has turned into a battle between loyalists and outsiders.
The race for the top post in the Bihar Congress has turned into a battle between loyalists and outsiders. With the party high command set to announce the new Bihar Congress president any time soon, several senior leaders belonging to different castes and communities have staked claim to the post.
The central leadership is looking for a leader who wields considerable influence across different sections and can rebuild the party ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The party recorded its worst ever performance in the 2010 assembly elections in the past 10 years, winning just four out of the total 243 seats.
Bihar Congress president Mehboob Ali Qaiser, who lost the polls, offered his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi but was asked to continue till a replacement is found.
Several names are doing the rounds. Prominent among them are former PCC chief Anil Sharma, Nagaland governor Nikhil Kumar, Vijay Shankar Mishra, Madan Mohan Jha, Ashok Choudhary, Avadesh Singh, Akhilesh Singh, Sadanand Singh and West Bengal in-charge Shakeel Ahmed.
Hectic lobbying has escalated the infighting. “The leadership has to select from loyalists and defectors,” a leader said.
