Lack of visible police force on outer Delhi roads make women feel unsafe

According to a survey by an NGO, which had come out with 100 unsafe places in Delhi, the area around Rohini is one of the most unsafe places for women.
The incident took place two days after an MBA student was shot at outside her residence in Narela area of outer Delhi.
Women living in outer Delhi say that the lack of police presence on roads is one of the major reasons why they feel unsafe.
“It is impossible for us to come out of our homes after dark. Men on the streets pass lewd remarks or whistle. With no visible police force on the streets, we prefer to remain silent rather than retaliate,” said Akansha Kumar, a resident of Rohini sector 20.
According to the survey — conducted by NGO Whypoll — Dhaula Kuan, Nelson Mandela Marg, Benito Juarez Marg, Paharganj and Mehrauli-Gurgaon road have emerged as the five most unsafe places for women in NCR.
The list of 100 unsafe areas also includes Mangolpuri and Rithala areas of outer Delhi.
“It is the dark areas which are a cause of concern for us. The series of incidents of blade slashing in Mangolpuri is another example why we fear coming out especially during evenings. Incidents of snatchings are also common,” Shradha Sinha, a resident of Pitampura said.
Two days ago, a 25-year-old MBA girl had been shot at by bikers outside her residence in Narela which sparked a fresh wave of panic among residents.
“We are taking steps to ensure the safety of women in our area. Apart from giving self-defence training to girls, we are also increasing patrolling in areas where security is needed. We have also given contact numbers of SHOs and ACPs who can be contacted in case of emergency,” said BS Jaiswal, DCP (outer).
“The Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) have also ben stationed in isolated areas of outer district,” he added.
