'LeT letter threatens terror strikes'

UP police receive a letter which claims that LeT could carry out explosions in the state and various other parts of India, officials say on Wednesday.

The Uttar Pradesh Police received a letter which claims that terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) could carry out explosions in the state and various other parts of India, officials said on Wednesday.

"A letter was received two days ago by the Bulandshehar railway station master, claiming that LeT would strike at various places, mainly at railway stations in Uttar Pradesh," Deputy Inspector General (Meerut Range) Prashant Kumar told IANS over the phone.

The station master later forwarded the letter to the police.

According to Kumar, the letter claimed that the outfit might also launch terror strikes at the India Gate in Delhi, Golden Temple in Amritsar and the Vaishnodevi shrine in Jammu.

"The letter has demanded the release of Afzal Guru who was sentenced to death in the 2001 Parliament attack case," Kumar added.

The Inspector General (Meerut Range) VK Gupta said that the security has been beefed up in the state, but said it could be a hoax letter.

"Last year, we had received a similar letter claiming to blow up some vital instillations, which later turned out to be a hoax. Our initial investigations say that the handwriting of both the letters resembles very much and further investigations are underway," he said.
