The mcd on Friday shut down Turquoise Cottage, one of Delhi’s favourite watering holes. ‘TC’, as the nightspot at Adchini is popularly known, was operating out of a residential area, civic officials said.

Partygoers were disappointed on Friday evening after TC staff turned them away. Architecture student Ankita Chavan said: “Friday nights, besides Wednesdays and Saturdays, are special because deejays do their own stuff and live bands perform. TC is one of the few rock havens left in the city and I am disappointed it has been shut down.”

The owner was not available for comment. Restaurant staff could not explain why TC had been open despite having been sealed earlier on the orders of a monitoring committee set up by the Supreme Court to look into illegal constructions in the city.

An MCD officer said: “The establishment has been closed on the directions of the monitoring committee. The area is meant only for residential purposes, but commercial establishments have come up in a big way.”

A monitoring committee member said: “TC’s basement had been converted into a pub with a full-fledged bar. There were also several complaints from people in the neighbourhood.” Besides TC, MCD on Friday sealed over 40 illegal commercial units on the same stretch.

Other popular hangouts targeted in drives over the past few months include Café Bistro in Hauz Khas, Mocha in Greater Kailash and Olive Bar and Kitchen in Mehrauli.
