President Pratibha Patil on Sunday congratulated Kamlesh Sharma on his election as Secretary General of the Commonwealth. The president said she was especially very happy that Sharma has become the first Indian to be selected for the top post.
"This emphasises the respect for India in the Commonwealth," Patil added. Sharma, a career diplomat was yesterday unanimously chosen as the new Commonwealth Secretary General, becoming the first Indian to hold the coveted post of the 53-member grouping.
