Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday greeted citizens on the occasion of Baisakhi, Vishu and other harvest festivals, saying they symbolised hope and celebration of the hard work by farmers.

In a message, he said: "The harvest festivals symbolise hope and celebration of hard work by our farmers. They also give us an occasion to express our gratitude towards the farmers who form the backbone of our society and economy."

"May Baisakhi, Vishu, Tamil new year day and Mesadi this year usher in peace, prosperity and happiness for all."

The harvest festival is known as Vaisakhi in northern India, Vishu in Kerala and Mesadi in Tamil Nadu.
