Punjab cop shoots at eatery owner over food bill

An argument over paying a food bill allegedly aggravated an inebriated personal security officer (PSO) of a businessman so much so that he shot at an eatery owner from his licenced gun in the high-security Chanakyapuri area on Monday night. However, the bullet missed its target and no one was injured in the incident.

The PSO, Amarjeet Singh, 40, a Punjab Police constable has been arrested and a case of attempt to murder has been registered against him at the Chanakyapuri police station. He had come to the eatery ‘Arjun Ka Dhaba’, near Arunchal Bhawan on Kautilya Marg, with his associates — Ram Karan and Bhim Bahadur. They, too, have been caught.

Singh is a PSO to Neeraj Saluja, a Ludhiana-based businessman.

A Toyoto Fortuner car, which belongs to Singh’s employer, in which the three had come to the eatery has also been seized.

Police said the argument ensued after Arjun Prasad Gupta, the eatery owner, asked Singh to pay R295 as food bill, which he refused.

“When they finished the food, Gupta handed over a bill of R295 to them. Singh got irritated over this and said they were members of staff at Arunachal Bhawan and should not be charged,” said a police officer.

“Gupta insisted that they must pay the bill. Bahadur took out R200 and handed it over to him. Singh snatched the money from Gupta and threatened to shoot him. An argument broke out between them and Singh fired at Gupta,” he said.
