In her budget speech, chief minister Sheila Dikshit said that the construction for the R1131-crore much-delayed project has started. She also said that the bridge is likely to be ready by December 2013.

Constructed over the river Yamuna near Wazirabad, the Signature Bridge will be a replica of the famous London Bridge and is expected to become a huge tourist destination of Delhi.

Interestingly, when initially conceptualised about four years ago, the construction cost of the bridge was pegged at R459 crore.

The project, however, was put on hold due to the October Commonwealth Games.

Keeping her promise that the construction of the Signature Bridge would be taken up immediately after the Games, the chief minister made a specific mention about the status of the project in her budget speech.
