NEW DELHI: Students who bunk off a class or two are not difficult to find in the school register. But in a unique initiative, parents will now be able check which teachers are missing classes.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to link the attendance of all the teachers in their schools to an online system.

Officials said that the project will be started as a pilot in all the schools of Najafgarh zone. The parents of children who go to these schools can log on to the municipal corporation’s website and check which teachers are missing classes.

Senior officials said that by ensuring that teachers regularly attend classes, the corporation aims to bring down the dropout rate of students and raise the standards of education.

“The system will be linked to the Aadhaar cards of the teachers to ensure their complete details can be accessed by both officials and the parents. This will also help us do away with the need for carrying out inspections at the schools,” said a municipal official.

There are approximately 80 schools in the Najafgarh zone with 2,800 teachers. Senior officials said the system may be replicated in other zones. The south body runs a total 589 schools with an approximate strength of three lakh students and 13,000 teachers.

“We are looking for a complete image makeover of the municipal corporations-run schools. We are often accused of not being serious with the attendance of teachers and the students. We have made extensive plans to improve the quality of education in our schools,” said a municipal official.

The SDMC has recently initiated several other projects, including a students’ assessment project and had decided to collaborate with NGOs to enhance the quality of education being imparted by its schools.
