Women prefer living in S. Delhi
When it comes to accommodation for women, facilities around South Campus have an edge over the ones close to North Campus, says Pehel, Delhi University’s support group for women.
The group arrived at the conclusion after analysing responses of students to a questionnaire. “The questionnaire was filled up by women students of Satyawati College, Gargi College, Miranda House, Kamla Nehru College and Kirori Mal College and pertain to only PG accommodation facilities around North and South Campus. Youngsters in South Campus have a grouse against the long distance they travel every day on their way to college. Otherwise, they seem pretty satisfied with the places they stay at. In comparison, those in North Campus have several complaints concerning hygiene, overcrowding, substandard food and lack of privacy,” said Shormishtha Panja, convener of Pehel.
Out of 100 respondents close to 35 were from South Campus and 65 from North.
However, satisfaction comes dear for students living around South Campus. The rent paid by the respondents staying here starts at Rs 2,500 and goes all the way up to Rs 10,000, which is considerably expensive when compared to rents of Rs 1,250-7,500 for PG facilities around North Campus.
“The collated data has been handed over to Pro-Vice Chancellor S.K. Tandon in the form of a CD. If he allows us then we can also post these results on the web for students to take advantage of it,” added Panja. The 100 questionnaires were filled up over a period of roughly one year.
Pehel volunteers are now being trained to gather even more detailed information of only hostel facilities in and around North Campus.
