The police said the victim, Deepak, 21, was trying to rescue his friend when he drowned.

According to the police, Deepak and his friends Hari Krishan and Subhash Kumar had gone to the Geeta Colony overpass at around 3.30 p.m., where Krishan accidentally slipped into the river. Deepak and Kumar jumped in to save their friend.

"While Kumar and Krishan managed to get out, Deepak drowned," said a senior Delhi Fire Services official on the condition of anonymity. Fire services were called in and rescue operations started.

"Deepak's body was washed away by strong currents. We have not yet found the body and as many as five divers are on the job," added the official.

"We tried to save each other but swam back to the bank when we found Deepak missing," said Kumar.

Also, there were reports of a family of four escaping unhurt after their car fell into the river. However, fire services denied of any such incident taking place.
