Admission: ‘Con’ aur Kaise

Admissions begin from June 1 and prospective DU students will try saam, daam, dand and bhed to get admission into the university. Taking advantage of this desperation, a few people make fake promises of admission in colleges. Be aware of such false promises and make sure you don’t fall for such traps.

The admission season in Delhi University (DU) will officially kick off on June 1. With cut-offs skyrocketing, dreams of studying in DU may look like an impossible feat. However, chances are you may come across people who will promise admission in your college of choice, even though you do not meet the cut-off. We came across some numbers on Facebook and Twitter offering to help secure a seat in the college of your choice. We called up and got a response from two people. On asking them for help, one of them said, “Kitnay marks aaye hain? Aur kaunsa subject and college chahiye?” After getting the answers, he said, “Contact se baat karke bataunga. Rate college choice pe depend karega.”

“I met someone a few days ago who was helping students get admission by giving them blank sports certificate,” says Rahul Sharma*. “Boards mein 71% aaye hain and this is a temptation, kyunki admission milna is marks mein impossible lagta hai! The guy said I would have to pay Rs 300 for the certificate, a little to the authorities and admission in a DU college would be guaranteed. But I stopped myself thinking Rs 300 mein kaun blank certificate deta hai, fake hi hoga.”

Not just Delhi University, these con men even promise admission in other varsities in the city. Pranay Rathi*, a DU aspirant, says, “I haven’t scored enough to get into DU but my father knows a big gun who has offered help. Usnay kaafi saaray universities ke naam liye hain, where he says it will be a cake walk for him to get admission for me.” Ask him how is he getting the admission and pat comes the reply, “Paise de ke, aur kya. The rate is anywhere from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.”

College authorities warn that hook or crook won’t help you land you a seat in a DU college. Dr Rama, principal of Hansraj College, says, “People fool students and take advantage of students’ desperation to get admission into DU. It is impossible to get back-door admission into any college in the university. Especially now that the process will be done online, everything has become transparent. Students should avoid people who say they can get admission done.”

The principal of Dyal Singh College, IS Bakshi is of the same opinion. He says, “These conmen know how to fool kids from rich families. They will ask for school certificates, will make a few fake calls and the students fall into their trap. Sometimes they even give fake admission receipts. I want to warn students and parents that no matter what, do not fall for such tricks. Nothing apart from your marks can guarantee you admission in the university.”
