Students of GNM High School at Katrasgarh in Dhanbad hit the roads on September 7 to beg for money after a portion of the building collapsed in rain.

“The headmaster is politically motivated. He asked students to raise funds on streets only to show negligence of the district administration,” district education officer (DEO) Madhuri Kumari said on Tuesday, confirming the show-cause notice.

“The motive of the school headmaster was not renovation of the building but to get cheap publicity in the locality.”

The DEO said the headmaster had been asked whether he had written to the education department or the state government about the dilapidated condition of building. “Fund collection by begging was organised without taking permission from the department.”

Headmaster Chitranjan Kumar said he had not asked school children to beg. “Even I was not aware that any such programme was going to be organised,” he said, adding the schoolchildren and parents might have collected funds after school hours.

“The school building is quite dilapidated and any untoward incident might happen any time. The alarming condition might have motivated students and parents to go for fund collection to draw the attention of the district administration,” the headmaster said, skirting queries if he brought the condition of the building to the notice of the officials concerned.

“Our school building is in a bad condition. We feel unsafe while sitting in the classroom after a portion of the building collapsed,” said a student.
