Normalisation norm has hit JEE rankings: Students
How the normalisation method has hit the rankings of JEE 2019. Read what students and expert say.
The new normalisation formula introduced this time to tabulate the JEE main examination results, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), has affected the ranking of examinees, claim subject experts and students.

The results declared on Monday night are to entrance exams for admission to engineering courses in the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), NIT (National Institutes of Technology) and other centrally administered technical institutes.
Last year, Prayagraj student, Priyadarshi Singh, who scored 261, secured an all-India rank of 1049. This year, Sufiyan Ansari scored 268 but could only secure an all-India rank of 3487.
It was the first time that the centrally administered NTA, set up in 2018, had conducted the examinations.
Till 2018, the JEE mains were conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in both online and offline modes. Most candidates appeared in offline examinations.
But the NTA conducted an online- only examination this year for the first time. Experts say that multiple sets of question papers are used in the online examinations.
To balance tough and the easy questions, the NTA introduced a normalisation formula for determining the rank of an examinee. Due to this, even though scoring more this year, ranks have dipped, claimed CP Sharma, who runs one of the city’s most successful coaching centres.
Shivani, Sufiyan, Shantanu and others achieve success
Shivani Verma, daughter of Shekhar Verma, an IIIT-Allahabad professor, secured an all India rank of 2180 in JEE mains this year.
The 2018 high school district topper from the Maharshi Patanjali Vidya Mandir School, Shivani Verma passed the exams securing 98.2% marks. She achieved these marks through self-study and practice, without any external help of coaching or tuition.
Dariyabad’s Sufiyan Ansari, secured 564 all India rank in the OBC (other backward caste) category. However, his general all India rank is 3487 with a score of 268 marks.
Earlier, Sufiyan had cleared the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Entrance Exam securing the 25th rank.
Sufiyan completed his primary education from a school in his locality—Kalyani Convent School. The rest of his schooling from Class 8 to 12 was done at Ewing Christian Public School. Sufiyan achieved a score of 93.8% in the class 12 boards exams.
He had appeared for the JEE mains 2018 exams too but due to unsatisfactory results, he decided to take a year’s break and prepare for the exams.
Sufiyan’s father Mohd Ahmed is a businessman with a shop in Chowk, whereas his mother Shaista is a homemaker. Sufiyan’s mentor Sujit Singh, director and chemistry expert at Chemica Point coaching institute, congratulated him on his achievement and wished him a bright future.
Shantanu Mishra who completed his Class 12 from Maharshi Vidya Mandir in 2018, secured 5046 all India rank in the JEE main 2019. His father KP Mishra is a doctor by profession.
