Ranbir Kapoor’s big-budget period drama Shamshera has fallen flat at the box office, failing to show any growth at the ticket counters even on Sunday. The film had opened to poor numbers and even registered a small dip on Saturday. It had to show a massive growth on Sunday to have some chance of recovery but failed to achieve that, as per reports. Mounted on a massive 150 crore budget, Shamshera marked Ranbir Kapoor’s return to the big screen after four years. Add to that the film’s scale and a big production house backing it, and it was expected to have a massive opening. However, that hasn’t come to pass. The Karan Malhotra film also stars Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor and tells the tale of a rebel’s battle against a brutal general enslaving his tribe in 19th century India.

A report in Box Office India says that while the film did see “around 20% growth in mass pockets”, these areas have shown up to 50% growth for other big films on Sundays. This means Shamshera’s growth is a little sub-par. The film has collected 11-12 crore on Sunday, a meagre 10% growth over the previous two days. This has taken its overall domestic collections over its opening weekend to 31 crore.

Given this lack of growth, many industry insiders have predicted a sharp fall for the film as the weekend ends. Given that the pan-India film Vikrant Rona is getting a wide release next week, Shamshera is bound to suffer. Many have predicted the lifetime business of the film will not even cross the 50 crore mark. Film trade analyst Sumit Kadel tweeted on Monday, “#Shamshera had a dismal weekend of 31.25 cr.. Lifetime collection to wrap under 50 cr nett.”

Following these disappointing returns, Ranbir may want to shift focus to his upcoming release Brahmastra. The fantasy-fiction extravaganza has been made on a scale even larger than Shamshera, with a reported budget of 300 crore. The Ayan Mukerji film also stars Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, and Mouni Roy. It releases on September 9.
