Actor Nargis Fakhri’s reaction to constant link-ups in a recent interview — “I am waiting to become a lesbian” — hasn’t gone down well with the gay community.
“Nargis has cracked a bad joke ... she has made a mockery of lesbians,” lashes out Rupika Dhillion of Space, an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) rights group.
Gay rights activist Shashi Bhushan agrees. “It’s an insensitive remark. She should have refrained from bringing up the LGBT to protect herself from rumours.”
Maya Shanker of Sangini Trust, a lesbian support group, says, “How lovely if Nargis could choose to become a lesbian, we’d have a great lesbian role model! But sexual orientation is not a choice, someone please tell her.”
The actor, however, defends, “I didn’t mean to offend. I’m tired of the speculation about my personal life.”
