The zesty fests of DU

Know the much-talked-about annual fests of the Delhi University colleges, well in advance.

Shri Ram College of Commerce
Name of the fest: Crossroads

One of the most sought after fests in DU, it is attended by campuses across Delhi. The highlights include Woodstock – rock band competition, Rythmnesia - western dance competition, Inferno – fashion show, and gaming events comprising street soccer and paint ball. The fest is concluded by a star night, where celebs enthrall the crowd. This year, the musical trio Shankar–Ehasaan–Loy performed. There’s also a DJ night and a rock night. Rock band Agnee took on the stage at Crossroads this year. “I’d bet ours is the best fest in the varsity,” says Gaurav Aggarwal, a member of the college’s Students’ Union.

Ramjas College
Name of the fest: Mosaic

This year, the fest had a performance by the band Stereo Nation, and since the entry after the first hour of the performance was free, thousands of students came for it. This three-day fest hosts rangoli making, face painting and western dance competitions among others. “Lots of students attend and the atmosphere is simply great. All one needs for entry, is to show their Identity card. We also have celebrity performances, making our fest really happening,” says second-year student Tuman Baruah.

Kamala Nehru College

Name of the fest: Ullas

Ullas, the two-day fest is famous among girls for its various stalls selling junk jewellery, ethnic kurtas, T-shirts etc. You can even get hair beading or a tattoo done at the fest. One thing that attracts a huge crowd is the college’s fashion show competition. The second day has a jam session followed by a rock band performance. "KNC’s fest is fun. We’ve had celebs such as Palash Sen, Parikrama, Anushka Sharma and Shibani Kashyap, come in for the finale," says Isha Gupta, a final year student of KNC.

Maitreyi college
Name of the fest: Rhapsody

With participation from about 20 colleges across Delhi, the fest here, has it all — street play, fashion show, western and Indian dance and creative writing. There’s also a rock night, where popular bands perform. This year, Faridkot, took on the stage and enthralled the crowd with their foot-tapping tracks. “It’s one of the most sought after events of our college,” says Gagan Prit Singh, a second year student of the college.

Hans raj college
Name of the fest: Confluence

Confluence is counted amongst one of the biggest fests in Delhi University’s North Campus. The fest usually takes place in the month of November, but this year it took place in February. “Big celebrity performances in the sports grounds makes it a big crowd puller. Boulevard - Battle of Bands, fashion and choreography shows are the most sought after events at the fest,” says Ashish Chopra, a final year student at the college. Over the years, the fest has seen performances by Euphoria, Indian Ocean, Neeraj Sridhar and many more.

Hindu College
Name of the fest: Mecca

This four-day-long fest, is no less when it comes to footfall. Performances by popular rock bands and celebrities, and competitive events like debating, theatre, choreography and western music, make it what it is. Singer Mohit Chauhan performed at the celeb night, this year, while bands such as Underground Authority, East India Company and Kaash, performed at this year’s carnival. “We get the best of Bollywood to perform for us,” says Himanshu Kaushik, a B Com (Pass) graduate from the college.

Sri venkateswara college
Name of the fest: Nexus

One of the most popular fests in South Campus, Nexus is spread over three days and is known for its jam sessions and rock concerts. Apart from this, the fest also holds competitions such as dramatics, western music and choreography. In the past, bands such as Euphoria, Indian Ocean and Advaita have enthralled the crowd. “One always looks forward to performances by music bands at this fest. It is also a great place to meet new people from different colleges that come for the concerts,” says Sahil Raina, an ex-student of the college.

Fest time is one of the very few days when boys are allowed entry into girls colleges. Shruti, the three-day fes

t is considered to be one of the most organised fest in the campus. "Usually in girls colleges, the security is very elaborate. Also we have the coolest

crowd, so boys just want to be here," says final year student, Surbhi Bhola. Street plays and fashion shows are the highlight. This year, Kailash Kher’s concert was well appreciated.

Name of fest: Tempest

More than anyone else, the boys look forward to this three-day-fest. This year, the college fest was celebrated as a Green College Festival. Street play, documentary filmmaking, and western dance competition are also a part of this event. “The choreography competition is the most sought after event event and goes jam packed!,” says Ruchika Sharma, a second year student of the college. A must attend event is the rock night that sees performances by bands. The highlight, this year was the newly-added street dance competition.

Kirori Mal College
Name of the fest: Renaissance

Celebs such as Amitabh Bachchan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ghulam Ali have performed here. The highlight of the fest is Rhapsody – western dance competition and the pop night. Singers Kailash Kher, Sonu Nigam and Shibani Kashyap have performed at previous pop nights, whereas, the fest’s rock nights have had performances by Parikrama and Euphoria. “Our fest is the most rocking,” says Gagan Singh Chauhan, a B Com Honours graduate from KMC.

Institute of Home Economics

The fest of IHE has gained popularity over the years. “Our fest is comparatively a small budget festival, but it’s no less than any other college. We host some very cool and exclusive events,” says Sumakshi Gupta from the student’s union. Marked by events such as Flames – fashion show, Rhythm Mix – choreography dance competition and Masquerade - street play competition, the fest also holds a rangoli making competition. The various competitive events at the fest, are organised by the cultural societies of the college in tune with the students union. This year, pop singer Juggy-D performed at the fest.

Jesus and Mary College

Name of the fest: Montage

As the name suggests, the fest is a montage of various performing and non-performing arts. This two-day fest has a range of

events and competitions — Indian dance, photography, debate, western dance, T-shirt designing, rangoli-making, Madrgal - western music competition and the choreography competition, Mudra. The fest ends with either a DJ night or a rock concert. "Our college fest is great fun as these are the only two days of the year when we have boys coming in and we see some amazing crowd," says Akanksha Kapoor, ex president, JMC.

Name of the fest: Tarang

This fest is known for its food carnival. From Mexican to Italian to Indian street food, you would find everything served under one roof. “I thoroughly enjoyed the food carnival at the fest last year, and I am really looking forward to the one next year,” says Priyanka Sharma, a second year student of LSR. Other things to watch out for at this fest, are Yavanika and Nukkad, the stage play and street play competitions respectively. Other competitions include tattoo making, caricature, ad and poster making. This three-day long festival, usually ends with a rock show or a DJ night.
