Starved of superhits, Bollywood is pinning its hopes on big budget releases in the new year.

As the world wakes up to a bright new 2010, the year brings with it renewed hopes. Although 2009 ended on a promising note, with 3 Idiots making up for some of the losses, it was an overall dismal year for Bollywood. The industry lost close to Rs 700 crore last year. All thanks to the economic slump, the producer-distributor strike and big budget projects such as Kambakkht Ishq and Blue that turned out box-office turkeys. HT City takes a look at some more big budget, big star line ups set for release in the first quarter of this year.

Pyaar Impossible

The first big film of 2010 is a beauty and the geek love story and already has the campus buzzing. The film is written by Uday Chopra and directed by Jugal Hansraj.

VEER
Starring: Salman Khan, Zarine Khan, Geeta Soti

Budget: 50 crore (approx)
The film has been making news for its leading lady Zarine Khan, who is a Katrina lookalike and its script said to be penned by Salman himself.

My Name is Khan
Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Jimmy Shergill

Budget: Rs 60 crore (approx)
Based on the 9/11 terror attack and its impact on an Indian Muslims in the US. Buzz is that SRK’s Newark detention scene is also being added to the film.

Teen Patti
Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, R Madhavan, Ben Kingsley
Release: February 26
Budget: Rs 35 crore (approx)
Supposedly inspired from the Hollywood flick 21. Amitabh Bachchan plays a professor who tutors students in high stake gambling. Ben Kingsley plays the world’s greatest living mathematician.

Kites
Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Kangna Ranaut

Budget: 60 crore
