At the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, actors Sonam Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut wore dresses that were as stunning from the back as they were in front. But there is one special detail that made the Bollywood A-listers’ gowns even more of a head-turner.

With an abundance of A-list attendees, the glamour at Cannes Film Festival 2018 didn’t stop. While we were busy admiring the fabulous red carpet looks of Bollywood beauties - from Sonam Kapoor’s princess-y strapless gown and Deepika’s modern-yet-romantic ivory number to Kangana Ranaut’s demure-yet-impactful sheer appearance and that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan butterfly gown - there is one detail that we almost missed.

Sure, we saw the bold, statement-making make-up and the stunning jewellery at Cannes — the 12-day event that has nothing yet everything to do with fashion and beauty. We even made sure to pay attention to more than just the front of these outfits, and zoomed in on the equally beautiful backs of the gowns. But as we thought we’d seen it all, something else suddenly caught our attention: The magnificent trains that swept the glam carpet.

As it turns out, almost every Bollywood A-lister at Cannes 2018 wore a whimsical, fashion-forward red carpet dress that had this detail in common, and they were so spectacular that we’ll be dreaming about them for weeks to come.

In the pictures below, Aishwarya, Deepika, Kangana and Sonam prove trains are what turn heads on red carpets.

After transforming into a real-life Cinderella at Cannes 2017, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan reprised her stellar black tie wardrobe with another couture gown by designer Michael Cinco for her first red carpet outing at Cannes 2018. Her elaborate gown took 3,000 hours to handcraft (that converts to 125 days if the dress-makers worked non-stop), featured ultra-violet, midnight blue, and red thread works and boasted a 20-foot train that mimics ‘a butterfly emerging from it’s chrysalis.’

Aishwarya looked glamorous while floating on the red carpet, for the second time, in a high-shine strapless mint gown. Her sleek updo was the perfect complement to her bespoke gown by Lebanese-American designer Rami Kadi, and its endless train.

Deepika Padukone headed out to the famous Cannes red carpet in a showstopping all-over floral-embroidered (and totally see-through) Zuhair Murad gown with strategically placed beading. The gown came complete with a plunging neckline — it is Cannes, after all — and a matching cape with a long, dramatic train.

For her second red carpet outing, Deepika brought the drama with this sculptural fuchsia pink gown with a cascading train from Ashi Studio. Her three-dimensional, almost regal and fairytale-like, dress was crafted from yards and yards of tulle.

Sonam Kapoor wore an extravagant custom Ralph and Russo lehenga peppered with tiny Swarovski crystal pearls and beads and a breathtaking train. It featured floral hand embroidered and was paired with a crop top with three quarter sleeves and a side cape.

Sonam’s stepped onto the Cannes red carpet for the second time wearing a tulle Vera Wang gown that had a nude-coloured, strapless bodice, an asymmetric ruffle detail on the back and contrasting layers and layers of lemon yellow and beige tulle.

For her debut Cannes red carpet look, Kangana Ranaut showed off her sculpted arms and back in a see-through Zuhair Murad gown. She let the sheer, layered crystal-embellished train of her Zuhair Murad gown do the talking by choosing limited accessories.
