The England national football team have been perennial underachievers in international tournaments despite being seen as a proverbial ‘powerhouse’ of the game. They began their FIFA World Cup 2018 campaign against Tunisia at the Volgograd Arena in Volgograd, Russia on Monday with a win courtesy of skipper Harry Kane. Kane tapped home in the 11th minute to give the Three Lions the lead. However, Tunisia equalised thanks to a penalty that was conceded by Kyle Walker. England pushed forward hard for the remainder of the game but had to wait for injury time to find the winner when Kane headed home from a corner. 1:35 AM IST: That’s all from our side, thank you so much for joining us! Do join us tomorrow for more live coverage of the tournament.
1:30 AM IST: You have to feel for Tunisia too. They defended well - albeit they got lucky with some questionable referee calls - and only conceded in added time.
1:25 AM IST: It’s all over. Harry Kane’s brace is the difference between the two sides. Let’s be fair to Tunisia - they defended quite well for the most part but England’s constant pressure eventually paid off... even if it happened at the last minute.
1:20 AM IST: GOAAAAAAL! Harry Kane again! A last-minute corner sees Kane head home from close range what is surely likely to be the winner!
1:19 AM IST: 4 minutes added time.
1:12 AM IST: The longer this goes on, the likelier Tunisia are leaving this game with a point.
1:09 AM IST: England win a free-kick from close range but Younh’s shot goes over. Meanwhile, Dele Alli comes off for Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
1:06 AM IST: Wave after wave of England attacks are being withstood by Tunisia. Full credit to them; they’ve hung on for dear life but are on the cusp of gaining a valuable point.
1:02 AM IST: A little over 15 minutes to go and the scores are, amazingly, still level. Tunisia would be very happy with that result.
12:58 AM IST: Raheem Sterling comes off, to be replaced by Marcus Rashford. Attacking change from Southgate.
12:56 AM IST: Tunisian fans perform a Mexican wave. At the very least, they’re having a good time!
12:52 AM IST: Both sides could use a substitution or two at this point. They look a bit tired out there.
12:48 AM IST: England are parked in Tunisia’s half; Tunisia are parked inside their box. The scoreline continues to remain unaffected.
12:44 AM IST: England, for all their domination of possession - they’ve had 59% possession thus far - need to convert that into chances.
12:40 AM IST: Raheem Sterling - who had a quiet first half - is growing into the game now. He inexplicably wins the side a corner that results in a shot on target and an easy save for the ‘keeper.
12:36 AM IST: England have again started the second half positively. They need to convert the chances they create, however.
12:33 AM IST: Second half underway! Let’s see if either side can find that winner.
12:18 AM IST: Half-time and it’s Tunisia 1-1 England. Ferjani Sassi’s penalty cancelled out Harry Kane’s early opener. The stage is set for a thrilling second half.
12:15 AM IST: This first half has absolutely flown by. 3 minutes added on!
12:14 AM IST: England are threatening from set pieces. Lingard shoots and earns a corner after Trippier’s free-kick is nodded down by Maguire. The corner also sees them threaten but the goalkeeper eventually collects.
12:11 AM IST: England somehow manage to bungle multiple chances after a free-kick is awkwardly dealt with by the goalkeeper.
12:08 AM IST: Talk about undoing a good 30 minutes with one bad decision. England dominated the first half-hour and are not ahead thanks to one rather soft foul. Walker, son... what have you done!
12:05 AM IST: PENALTY TO TUNISIA! Walker penalised for a foul inside the box, a decision that stands even after a VAR check. Ferjani Sassi steps up. Pickford guessed right but the ball is well hit and Tunisia are level! Unbelievable scenes!
12:02 AM IST: The half hour mark has passed and it has been all England thus far. Keiran Trippier’s free-kick found Harry Maguire but his header flies straight into the hands of the ‘keeper.
12:00 AM IST: Tunisia players gather around the ref to express displeasure over a free-kick awarded against them. They need to be careful now.
11:56 PM IST: Tunisia are now gradually growing into the game. England need a second goal soon.
11:52 PM IST: England are often slow, cagey starters at international tournaments. This start against Tunisia has been refreshing: quick, incisive and efficient.
11:48 PM IST: Henderson now comes close with a nice shot from distance. Unfortunately it’s straight at the ‘keeper.
11:45 PM IST: Bad news for the Tunisia first-choice goalkeeper Mouez Hassen, who has to be replaced due to an injury.
11:42 PM IST: GOAL! Harry Kane gives England the lead! John Stones’ header from a corner was saved by ‘keeper but Kane was on hand to tap in the rebound!
11:38 PM IST: England have dominated the early goings of the match thus far. They need to score a goal to calm those early nerves though.
11:34 PM IST: And again! An attacking move down the left side sees Sterling with only an empty net to slot into but somehow he misses! He was saved by the flag but yikes... that was a bad miss.
11:33 PM IST: England showing attacking intent early! Lingard’s close effort is saved and the resulting corner comes to nothing.
11:30 PM IST: The referee has blown his whistle and we are underway!
11:25 PM IST: The players have emerged from the tunnel and have lined up for the anthems.
11:20 PM IST: 10 minutes to go! Will the Three Lions roar loud and proud or will Tunisia cause an upset? We shall find out very soon.
11:10 PM IST: Tunisia will undoubtedly go into this game with nothing to lose since most expect England to win the game. It will be nice to see another underdog triumph though.
11:00 PM IST: On paper, England are the better team and have far more experience at this level. However, games of football aren’t won on paper. Just ask Germany...
10:55 PM IST: England XI: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Henderson, Dele, Lingard, Young; Sterling, Kane.
10:45 PM IST: Hello and welcome to live coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2018 game between Tunisia and England!
England fell at the first hurdle in Brazil four years ago after failing to win a group stage game. Two years later they were knocked out of Euro 2016 by tiny Iceland, leading to criticism that a team that was once one of the world’s top sides had lost the mental strength to compete.
England go into the game tipped to advance to the next stage along with the Belgium. But England supporters are taking nothing for granted after a string of disappointing exits from major tournaments -- the team have not won a knockout game at a World Cup since 2006.
