23-year-old man found dead at paying guest accommodation in Gurugram, family cries foul

A 23-year-old man, who worked as a clerk with an advocate at the district court in Gurugram, was on Wednesday evening found dead in mysterious circumstances at a guest house-cum-paying guest (PG) accommodation in Sector 39, police said.

Maintaining that the incident took place around 6 pm soon after the victim, a resident of Devilal colony in Sector 9, had checked into a room on the third floor of the PG with his woman friend, also a resident of Devilal colony, police said preliminary probe suggested that he might have hanged himself. The victim’s family, however, alleged that he might have been murdered.

Dalbir Singh, station house officer (SHO), Sadar police station, said the woman friend called a friend of the victim on his phone, informing him that he had fallen unconscious. “The victim’s friend informed his family members and they rushed to the PG. They took him to a private hospital in sector 38, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” said SHO Singh, adding that the man was lying unconscious on the bed and no rope or cloth was found in the room, which might have been used for hanging.

Police, however, stated that no case has been registered against the woman since the family has not submitted a written complaint “accusing her”. “Police are conducting inquest proceedings under section 174 of code of criminal procedure. Except for neck, there were no injury marks on the body,” said SHO Singh.

Deepak Mathur, forensic expert at civil hospital, said though hanging seemed to be the cause of death, they are yet to get his viscera sample report. “The pattern of injuries on the victim’s neck is consistent with hanging. In strangulation, the nature of injury and collective evidence is different,” Mathur said.

Meanwhile, the victim’s uncle alleged foul play in the incident, saying that the victim’s neck had some injury marks. “My sister-in-law received a call from a man, who identified himself as a friend of her son. He said he was unwell and asked us to come to the PG. When we reached, the door of the hotel room was open and he was lying unconscious. A woman, who was in the room, claimed that he suddenly fell ill,” said the uncle.

He added, “I took him to the hospital. I think this is a case of murder. If my nephew was committing suicide, why did she not raise an alarm?”

Aman Yadav, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Sadar, said, “Police are trying to ascertain the circumstances which led to his death,” he said.
