A group of unidentified men allegedly took away ₹2.59 lakh from an automated teller machine (ATM) on Friday night at Sector 53. Thieves cut open the machine that had stopped dispensing money on Thursday because of a technical fault, police said.

The burglars used gas cutters to cut the ATM in Sector 53, near Wazirabad, that belongs to Tata Indicash.

A case in this regard was registered at the Sector 53 police station under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code on Saturday.

According to a complaint lodged by the police on Saturday, cash amounting to ₹2.59 lakh was stolen from the ATM that was unguarded when the incident took place.

Police suspect this theft, and a series of others in January this year, to be the handiwork of a gang that used to operate in the city in 2015.

“The ATM lost its connection with the bank grid on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, so the machine could not dispense cash. When the representatives of the bank reached the spot on Saturday evening to fix the ATM, they found the machine cut open with no cash in it,” Arvind Kumar, station house officer of the Sector 53 police station, said.

During preliminary investigation, the police found that the wires to the CCTV cameras of the ATM, the shop adjoining the kiosk and the shop in front of it were cut off.

The exact time when the incident took place is not known.

It is suspected that the buglers chose to loot this ATM as it didn’t have any security guard at night which made it an easy target, police said.

According to the complaint, the ATM had ₹2,00,000 of 100 denomination notes while it had ₹50,000 of 500 denomination notes. Further investigation is being conducted by the police in this regard.

The cases related to ATM theft are on a rise in the city.

On February 2, thieves took away an ATM of a nationalised bank from a kiosk in village Koh of Manesar.

On January 31, thieves struck at an Axis bank ATM on the night. They managed to remove the ATM machine which had ₹9 lakh cash. On January 28, an ATM of the ICICI bank located on Kasan road in Manesar was attacked and thieves managed to steal ₹10 lakh. On January 23, an ATM of the Punjab National Bank in Daulatabad village, that had ₹6 lakh, was taken away by thieves.

Last year, seven instances of ATM thefts were reported in Gurgaon.
