Cash, jewellery worth ₹11 lakh stolen from Suncity flat

A spurt in cases of theft in Suncity Township in Sector 54 has become a major concern for its residents.

A theft was reported on Saturday after unidentified men ransacked an apartment and fled with cash, jewellery and other valuables worth several lakhs of rupees from the apartment of a 62-year-old psychologist, who also runs an NGO in the city.

This theft is one of the many that have been reported from blocks B, C and D this year. A spurt in cases of theft in Suncity Township in Sector 54 has become a major concern for its residents.

On Saturday, thieves broke into the house of Satish Kaushik, who is a resident of block D in Suncity Township. He was in another city for a session and had returned late on Saturday night.

The thieves entered the apartment from the front door after removing the window grills. The thieves took ₹6lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh.

“I get some money from my land, and this I had kept in the safe so I could later put it in the bank. We usually don’t keep cash and jewellery at home,” Kaushik said.

“I take counselling sessions at universities and travel often. On Saturday, I returned around 10.30pm. When I entered the house I saw the wardrobes open and the house ransacked. The bed box, the safe and my bags were all open and all valuables had been taken away. My daughter-in-law is here from the USA, and her bag was in the other room; they took her jewellery,” Kaushik said.

Members of the residents’ welfare association (RWA) said this is not the first theft in the area and there have been a dozen other cases all of which were reported to the police.

RWA members alleged that the Gurgaon police was spreading false claims of tightening the noose around thieves.

“The township is getting unsafe day by day. Despite providing CCTV footages of the thefts, the police are unable to identify the thieves and arrest them. We will have to deploy more private security guards to increase the safety (in the colony) as we cannot depend on security arrangements made by the police,” RWA president Kuldeep Rana said.

The RWA members have decided to meet the commissioner of police on Monday so that he can direct the police station concerned to look into the safety issues of the area.

Twenty-five cases of thefts, including water motor and dozens of cycles, have been reported from blocks B, C, and D this year.

Police said they have increased police deployment in the area but it is not possible to check on each house in the township.

“We have registered a case and had sent forensic experts to the spot. There were no fingerprints found on the doors of the bedroom and it seems the thieves were wearing gloves. We are checking if we can get some CCTV footage to identify the thieves. We will soon get hold of the gang operating in the area,” ACP (DLF) Anil Kumar said.
