The accused had spread currencies in the denomination of Rs 10 and Rs 20 outside the car, and it amounted to only Rs 280, the police said. The cash was enough to catch the attention of the driver Chottu Ram who got out to pick it up.

Con men, suspected to be members of the thak-thak gang, took away Rs 2 lakh from the SUV of a real estate agent that was parked outside the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) office in Sector 14.

The accused allegedly told the driver of the Fortuner that the money fallen out of the car and he should pick it up, the police said.

The accused had spread currencies in the denomination of Rs 10 and Rs 20 outside the car, and it amounted to only Rs 280, the police said. The cash was enough to catch the attention of the driver Chottu Ram who got out to pick it up.

Just then, the accused fled with the briefcase containing the cash belonging to Virender Yadav, a resident of Sector 14.

“We have received a complaint that a few men stole a briefcase containing cash and important documents by conning the driver. The owner of the car was in the Huda office when this happened,” said ASI Ashok Kumar, Sector 14 police station.

The police said they are procuring CCTV footage and probing the matter.

In a similar incident, a Gurgaon-based social activist, Gauri Sarin, lost her mobile phone at Iffco Chowk. A gang of men diverted her attention and snatched her bag on Thursday. Although the accused could not take the bag, they managed to snatch her mobile phone, Sarin told police.

“On Thursday, around 7.45pm, I was returning home via Iffco Chowk when I heard a thud against the car. For a moment, I felt I had hit someone and panicked, but then I realised my car was going too slow to do that. Soon, there was a man banging on my car door and shouting expletives,” Sarin said on Facebook.

ASI Sanjeev of the DLF police station said the accused tried to snatch the bag but could only manage to steal her phone. “We are investigating the matter and accused will be nabbed soon,” he said.
