A 36-year-old security guard, deployed at Block F in Sector 57, was run over twice by a Maruti Swift car on Monday night. The man succumbed to injuries on Tuesday at a private hospital.
The deceased was identified as Gopi Ahirwal, a resident of Madhya Pradesh. He was living in a rented accommodation in Wazirabad village for the last one month.
The accused are reportedly thieves who steal side mirrors of cars and the guard had reportedly stopped them from committing the theft a few days before the incident involving the car.
Ahirwal was reportedly lying on the road for 20 minutes after being hit till the security head spotted him surrounded by people. He immediately informed the police and his senior officials about the mishap and rushed him to a private hospital nearby.
Ahirwal suffered multiple fractures on his hands, legs and his spinal cord was injured too, said the police.
The CCTV footage, available with Hindustan Times, clearly shows a white Maruti Swift car coming on the wrong lane and ramming the guard. Four youths were in the car and they stopped the vehicle for about two minutes after the guard went under the car. They then reversed the car and again run over Ahirwal, leaving him bleeding profusely.
The accused then fled in the car towards Hong Kong Mall, the police said.
“Several vehicles were seen halting on the road to see what was happening before the culprits fled the spot. If anyone had intervened, the guard would have been alive,” said Ajay Pandita, director (estate), Rigoss, which provides maintenance service to Ansal’s society in the area.
“We are looking for the car which was been captured by different CCTV cameras in the area and we will soon identify the culprits and arrest them. We have recorded statements of the witnesses and other guards who were deployed in the area at the time of the incident,” said inspector Arvind Kumar, SHO, Sector 56 police station.
Ahirwal is survived by his wife and two children, aged 3 and 5 years. He was the sole earning member in his family and had moved to Gurgaon a month ago from his home town.
According to the police, initial investigation and CCTV footage recovered from a few locations shows that the incident was a planned murder. They said many gangs, involved in theft of side mirrors and tyres of luxury cars and new vehicles, are active in the area.
The police said Ahirwal had recently stopped some miscreants from stealing side mirrors in Block F and G and the they suspect that he was targeted by them in revenge.
Side mirrors of two cars were reported stolen on Tuesday morning after the guard was run over, the police said.
Ahirwal’s family members have demanded a speedy investigation and arrests in the case.
A case was registered against unknown persons under section 338 ( causing grievous hurt), 279 (rash driving) and 304A (death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code at Sector 56 police station on Tuesday.
