Laptop, phones stolen from BJP leader’s South City-2 office in Gurugram

A team rushed to the spot with fingerprint experts and a dog squad soon after they were informed.

Burglars allegedly struck at the office of a BJP leader in South City-2, on Tuesday morning,and stole laptops and mobiles containing important data, the police said. A case was registered against unidentified persons and a probe is currently underway, the police said. No arrests have been made so far.

On Tuesday morning, the police received a call stating that a theft has taken place in Raman Mallik’s office in South City-2. Only laptops and mobile phones were stolen, while desktop and other items were left intact, the police said. “The laptops and mobiles had important data relating to elections, and it seemed as if the main target of the thieves was to steal the election data and related information,” said Mallik adding that the data was important from the point of view of the upcoming elections.

Mallik owns two houses adjacent to each other in South City 2. He lives in one, while the other is used as his office where a team of party workers stays at night.

Baljeet Singh, assistant sub-inspector from of Sector 50 police station, said that after receiving information a team rushed to the spot with fingerprint experts and the dog squad. “A case has been registered, and we have collected forensic evidence. Further investigation is in progress,” said Singh adding that they are also scanning the CCTV footage of the area to identify the accused.

The police said, nine people work and stay at the same house where the office is located. All of them were sleeping inside the house when the thieves struck on early Tuesday morning.

Mallik said he left home for Chandigarh for a party meeting at around 5.15 am and thieves entered the office at around 6 am. A case under section 380 (theft at housing unit) was registered at the Sector 50 police station on the complaint of one Ikjot, an employee who works in the office, police said.

Ikjot in his complaint said that he and his friend Ronit went to sleep at around 1 am on Monday, when they woke up in morning around 6.20 am, they found that his phone, Redmi Note 5 Pro, with two SIM cards and his laptop were missing. “Rohit’s phone, Oppo F-5, with SIM cards was also found missing. In total, four laptops and three phones were missing from the office,” Shamsher Singh, assistant commissioner of police(Crime), said.

Complainant further said that the outer main iron-gate remains open most of the time. “We were working till late so we forgot to lock the main entrance of the residence. The wooden gate was left open. Also, the door of the room was left open.

The thieves have taken advantage of the negligence and fled away with the laptops and mobile phones.

“Wallet of the party workers were also missing which contained their identification cards, credit cards, and cash,” Singh said.
