The development comes on the heels of MCG making a policy to regularise banquet halls. The move will help MCG collect Rs 120 crore in licence fee, and ensure residents’ safety as banquet hall owners will be required to conform to building norms, including taking fire safety measures.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) demolished three illegal banquet halls in sectors 33, 52, 58 on Friday. The drive was carried out after owners of these establishments were sent notices last month, officials said.

“Three illegal banquet halls were demolished. The drive was completed without any hindrance,” Inderjeet Kularia, deputy municipal commissioner of the MCG, said.

MCG officials said that there are 72 banquet halls in the city, of which nearly 35 are illegal as they fall in the 300-metre restricted area of the IAF ammunition depot in Sector 14 where no construction is allowed as per a Punjab and Haryana High Court order.
