New road safety measures on the Golf Course Road makes driving at night easier

The stretch is often congested and poorly lit and commuters have complained of hassles while driving on it

Traffic authorities on Wednesday adopted road safety measures, including installation of road surface markings, blinker lights, road stud reflectors and signages, on a 2km dimly lit stretch on the Golf Course Road.

The measures were taken on the stretch leading from the underpass near DLF-1 to the Sector 42-43 Metro station, making driving at night safer for commuters.

The stretch is heavily congested as the traffic from Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, HUDA City Centre and from Sikanderpur underpass converge here for heading towards condominium complexes and MNC offices on the Golf Course Road and residential areas.

ACP (traffic) Hira Singh said, “After discussing the matter with the authorities, we realised that the existing streetlights provided inadequate visibility. Hence, several road safety changes were undertaken to make the drive for commuters at night significantly safer.”

For residents driving on the stretch, who were facing problems with poor visibility after dark, the changes were the need of the hour. The traffic police officials had also reported regular occurrence of accidents.

“As there are no traffic lights on the stretch, motorists tend to speed. Hence, in the absence of proper lighting, vehicles would brush past railings or traffic medians. With the new changes motorists will be able to see traffic lanes and railings, and drive more cautiously,” Aniket Kapoor, a resident of DLF-5 said.

Another significant safety measure that has been taken is installation of road stud reflectors to demarcate the crossing where traffic from three sides converges. Residents said these reflectors are especially helpful to those who are unfamiliar with the city roads.

“Commuters are usually travelling at a high speed when they emerge from the Sikanderpur underpass, and the traffic light at the junction is the only reason they stop or slow down. However, the traffic light is only functional until 10pm. As a result, outsiders or new residents, who are travelling along the stretch after 10pm tend to continue speeding, unaware that there is a crossing where traffic from three sides converges,” Vineet Dhillon, a resident of DLF-4, said, adding that the road stud reflectors may serve as a warning to such motorists to be more cautious.
