The much-awaited upgradation of old Delhi-Gurgaon Road got a fillip on Tuesday when the Gurgaon municipal corporation alloted the contract to a firm selected to carry out the work. The project was delayed for more than two years as the detailed project report (DPR) had to be reviewed twice.

A 7.5-kilometre stretch will be developed as a six-lane road with dedicated cycle and pedestrian tracks, foot overbridges, autorickshaw stands, and storm water drains on either sides to tackle waterlogging, a spokesperson of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), said.
Earlier, the project was estimated to cost Rs 56 crore but the Revenue and Contract committee of the MCG objected to it. After that, a committee comprising joint commissioners and two executive engineers was formed in May. The committee studied the DPR and submitted a report in June after which the MCG commissioner approved the project.
The project will now cost Rs 36.61 crore. Gurgaon deputy mayor Yashpal Batra handed over the tender papers to the firm and asked its officials to complete work within the stipulated time. Batra said the project will provide relief from traffic congestion and waterlogging on the old Delhi-Gurgaon Road. He said the road also handles a high volume of traffic, often leading to snarls.
Commercial heavy vehicles such as trailers from Atul Kataria Chowk adds to traffic snarls on the road. He said the project DPR has been prepared keeping in mind all traffic bottlenecks. .
He said the road will be developed as a model road in Gurgaon. It will have cycle and pedestrian tracks of three metres each on either sides of the road. The road will have as six lanes from Mahavir Chowk to Palam Vihar curve after which it will be widened as per the available space.
The road will also have tracks marked for heavy vehicles such as trucks and trolleys as well as diversions.
