To ensure that no further damage is caused to the Hero Honda Chowk flyover, the traffic police on Thursday decided to restrict the movement of heavy vehicles on the flyover and started diverting them to the service lane from 5pm.

Traffic officials said that heavy vehicles will not be allowed till the flyover is repaired, although all four lanes of the carriageway were opened for regular traffic by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

“To prevent further damage to the structure, it has been decided that trucks should move on the service lane. We also deployed extra manpower to keep a vigil on traffic movement and prevent jams,” said inspector Azad Singh, in-charge, Hero Honda Chowk.

In the wee hours of Wednesday, a portion of concrete from the deck slab of the Hero Honda Chowk flyover, on the Jaipur to Delhi side, had fallen, leading to congestion on the highway.

Residents of developing sectors, who frequently use the flyover, said that most people were circumspect about using the damaged flyover and were preferring to use the service lane. “I went for a meeting but I asked my driver to avoid the carriageway as it is damaged. It is a hazard at present,” said Pravin Malik, a resident of Sector 86.

Traffic on the main carriageway at Hero Honda Chowk was also slowed due to the damage caused to the flyover on Wednesday morning, as vehicles had to negotiate the diversion. “There is an urgent need to repair the Hero Honda Chowk flyover at the earliest but that should resolve all future problems too. I hope the entire structure does not collapse in the future,” said Pravesh Kumar, a commuter.

Ramesh Yadav, an RTI activist, said that he has submitted a complaint to the Sector 37 police against the highway contractor and the officials who supervised the construction of this carriageway. “We had gone to meet senior police officers but they were busy due to election schedule. We will go and meet the assistant and deputy commissioner of police on Friday to get a case registered,” said Yadav.
