The district court on Tuesday sentenced four persons, including a 24-year-old woman, to life imprisonment for murdering a 26-year-old man in Pataudi area in April 2015.

Additional sessions judge Suruchi Atreja Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convicts. They were sentenced to a further year of rigorous imprisonment in case they failed to pay the fine.

They were convicted under sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 120B (conspiracy) as well as under relevant sections of the Arms Act. Arun Yadav, one of the convicted persons, had been out on bail, but was killed last year after an unidentified person shot at him, the police said.

Gonu Yadav, a businessman from Shikohpur , Kherki Daula, used to help his father in his stone-crushing business. On April 29, he left his home around 4.30pm, and around 7.30pm, one of the accused, Arun Yadav, intercepted his car near a petrol pump in Haily Mandi, Pataudi, and engaged him in a conversation. Within minutes, three men arrived in an SUV and fired nine rounds at Yadav.

According to the police, Priyanka, Gonu’s wife, had hatched the murder plan with her paramour, Arun Yadav, who involved three of his friends in shooting Gonu dead near the petrol pump. The police said the deceased was on his way to Rewari to bring home his mother who had gone to a relative’s place.

Arun and Priyanka were arrested on May 8 after her call detail records were recovered by the police. They said Arun had told them that he wanted to get rid of her husband as she had been married to her husband agaibst her will and she never liked him.

The police said that he had confessed to having an extramarital relationship with Priyanka. He also confessed about their intention to kill her husband.

However, the convicts denied their statement recorded under Criminal Procedure Code, saying they were falsely implicated.

“It is a progressive judgment that has set an example that crime that involves spouses be dealt with stringently. Marriage is sacrosanct and such kind of heinous acts are highly condemnable,” Shyambir Singh, counsel for the complainant, said.
