Cephalothin is used only parenterally.It is 70% protein bound.Plasma half life is 45 minutes.

Indications

Cephalothin is used in the treatment of infections caused by Gram positive organisms like pneumococci, Streptococcus Viridians, Staphylococcus Aureus and gram negative organisms like E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

Adults;1-2 gms I.V.every 6th hourly.Children;50-150 mgs/kg/day.

Contra Indications

Cephalothin is contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity and in pseudomembranous colitis.

Precautions

Precaution to be taken are during renal disease (when the dose needs to be reduced) and in Gastro-intestinal diseases (especially colitis, enteritis) .

Interactions

Probenecid increases the blood level of Cephalothin.
