In a recent study in New York, it was reported that more and more gyms are staying open round the clock. In fact, the concept of 24-hour gyms is quite popular and on the rise abroad. However, the situation is very different in India. Night birds in the Capital with erratic work schedules, find it hard to maintain a regular exercise routine due to the absence of any 24-hour gym.
A large and growing number of Delhiites, who have odd working hours, feel that if we can have coffee shops and night clubs that remain open till wee hours, then fitness surely should not take a backseat. Gaurav Makkar, general manager of Ozone Gym, Defence Colony says, “Being a health freak I would love to have the option of working out anytime. Though most of us hit the gym early due to our respective jobs, it’s people like media professionals, doctors and call centre executives working in shifts or at erratic hours who suffer the most. Unfortunately Delhi does not have any 24-hour gyms and the ones at 5 star hotels are only for in-house guests.”
Sonali Chaudhary, a media professional says, “Because of my odd work hours I don’t find time to exercise. There are times when I reach home at 1 or 2am and I feel like hitting the gym for relaxing my mind and body, but I don’t have a single option.”
What’s deterring us?
Places that claim to have a 24-hour gym facility also shut down by 10pm, whether you’re a guest or a member. Hyatt Hotel’s Club Olympus is open all round the clock for it’s guests but if you’re a member then you have to make it before 10pm for a workout. Fitness expert Vesna Jacob points out that the biggest deterrent is the security situation in the Capital. “The main reason behind the concept of 24-hour gyms is that one has an option to do things as per your personal schedule, and since we try to adjust life to our needs in everything else we do, why should fitness and gym be left out of it?
It’s beneficial not just for people, who work late but sometimes you may just want to hit the gym after getting back from a night
out with friends. It not only acts like a stress buster but helps to calm frayed nerves as well,” says Jacob, adding, “The security situation of the city is one of the major concerns but I don’t think that is reason enough not to have any 24 hour gyms at all.”
