Aditya-L1 Launch highlights: India successfully launched its maiden solar expedition, the Aditya L1 mission, with ISRO's PSLV rocket. This mission, following the successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar expedition, aims to study the Sun from a vantage point at the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point (L1), approximately 1.5 million kilometres from Earth. The L1 position allows continuous observation of the Sun without eclipses.

The spacecraft, equipped with seven payloads, will send data to Earth, with the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) being the most significant payload. It will capture around 1,440 solar images daily for analysis. The propulsion system, including the Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM), plays a vital role in reaching the intended orbit.

Aditya L1 launch LIVE updates: Where will ISRO's Sun mission be positioned?

Unlike Chandrayaan 3, which softly touched down near the lunar south pole, the solar probe will be positioned at the first Lagrange point in the Earth-Sun system instead.

Aditya L1 mission's detailed schedule

The entire journey from the launch to reaching L1 is expected to take approximately four months for the Aditya L1 mission. Here is a breakdown of the journey to the Sun-Earth system's L1 point.

Launch: The Aditya L1 mission will be launched by ISRO's PSLV XL rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC-SHAR), Sriharikota.

Initial Orbit: The spacecraft will be initially placed in a Low Earth Orbit.

Elliptical Orbit: The orbit will then be adjusted to become more elliptical.

Exit from Earth's Gravitational Sphere of Influence (SOI): The spacecraft will be propelled towards the L1 point using onboard propulsion. As the spacecraft moves towards the Lagrange point, it will exit Earth's gravitational Sphere of Influence.

Cruise Phase: After leaving Earth's SOI, the cruise phase of the mission will commence.

Halo Orbit: Subsequently, the spacecraft will be injected into a large halo orbit around the Lagrange point (L1).

As the countdown for India's maiden solar mission Aditya-L1 began on Friday, Keerthi, the wife of a project scientist who worked for Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) payload arrived at Shriharikota to witness the launch.

"As a wife, there are lots of hardships, so when earlier lunar mission was a failure we were telling people that a lot of people have worked on that...It was sad to hear that because we see they were put through a lot of hardship. "I am very excited. My husband is a project scientist for Aditya-L1. He worked for SUIT (Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope which is one Payload in Aditya L1. It is his 7 years of hardship. So, it's a really good new scientific probe to have out there teaching us about the Sun."

Hadfield stressed the critical role of technology in modern society and said, "Everybody on Earth is counting on technology... We are counting on a really complicated interconnected global electric and data system. The electromagnetic energy that comes from the Sun is both a benefit to that, but also a huge threat to that. So, putting a new sensor in between us and the Sun, that is looking specifically at how the Sun sends out these big damaging ejections of high-energy particles, is really useful information, not just for ISRO and not just for the Indian space program, but it's something that is sort of vital."
