Tanvel Kadam, an third year engineering student of a Lonavla-based college and hailing from Nashik, died on the spot in the incident, police said.

“Tanvel lost his balance while he was standing on the Amrutanjan bridge and fell down beside the Pune-Mumbai Expressway,” Amol Tambe, superintendent of police (Highways) said.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the incident took place while he was taking a ‘selfie’ on his phone at the bridge,” he added.

Vehicular traffic remained unaffected since the youth did not fall on the actual Expressway route.

According to Lonavala police, Tanvel had recently returned from his native place as his college was scheduled to re-open on Thursday.

Further investigation is on.
