Police patrolling was intensified on Sunday in Prayagraj's Chakiya area where gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad's house is located even as the Uttar Pradesh police tightened security across the state, a day after Atiq and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range.

Hitting out at the BJP government after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj, in a chilling turn of events, on Saturday night, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra on Sunday said the saffron party has turned India into a "mafia republic".

Ahmed and Ashraf, both jailed in Prayagraj, were in handcuffs when they were killed in full view of camera crews around 10 pm.

The horrifying visuals were circulated widely on social media platforms and television channels. The last rites of Ahmad's son Asad, who was gunned down in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, were performed in Prayagraj just hours before the shooting.

After gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj in full media glare on Saturday night, the father of one of the assailants on Sunday said his son was jobless and a drug addict, ANI reported.

The three assailants, who were arrested after shooting dead gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj, will be presented before the magistrate today.

All three attackers were apprehended at the scene after they voluntarily turned themselves in. They have been kept in the custody of the police and questioned.

AIMIM chief, addressing the media on Sunday morning, said radicalisation must be stopped and also slammed those who were celebrating the killings. “I am ready to die... Radicalisation needs to be stopped. I will surely visit Uttar Pradesh, I am not scared….Jab pyaar kiya toh darna kya,” he said, referring to the attack on his convoy in UP in February. Read more

The rule of law as laid down in our country’s Constitution is paramount. Criminals should be given the harshest punishment, but it should be under the law of the land.

Subverting or violating the rule of law and judicial process for any political purpose is dangerous for our democracy. Whoever does this, or gives protection to those who do such acts, should also be held responsible and the law should be strictly enforced on them.

It should be our collective endeavour to ensure that the judicial system and rule of law is at all times honoured in letter and spirit.

Laxmi, the aunt of Arun Maurya said that Arun Maurya had left the village in Kasganj when he was 10 to 11 years after death of his parents. She was totally unaware about crime committed by Arun in Prayagraj where Arun had shot dead Atiq and his brother. "I do not know about whereabout of Arun who has his land share after death of his father. I am not aware about any crime committed by Arun' said Laxmi while talking to media.

As a security measure entry of media persons has been banned at 5 Kalidas Marg which houses CM's official residence. Houses of several ministers are also in this vicinity. 

Security at the residences of both deputy CMs beefed up. The government planning to restrict entry of media directly at residences of ministers 

The decision is the fallout of Prayagraj incident where three shooters disguised as Electronic media reporters.

Families of both Sunny Singh and Lavlesh Tiwari have said they had left the house long time ago, and they were not in touch.

Kasganj police reached village Baghel Pukhta on Sunday morning and inquired about whereabout of Arun Maurya alias Kalia. His uncle Megh Singh was not in house and police interrogated aunt of Arun Maurya who told that Arun had left village after death of his parents. House of Arun Maurya has been reduced to dilapidated structure and none lives there.

Arun Maurya's father and mother have died and his uncle and aunt live in a village in UP's Kasganj. Arun Maurya alias Kalia has left the village for last 15 years and never came to village. His uncle Megh Singh Maurya resides in village with his family.
